Leadership Role

You will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring the delivery of daily transportation services, safety and operational needs as they apply to the provision of student transportation. You will oversee the coordination of all school bus routes and related contracted vehicles, while performing ongoing evaluations and reviews of operational requirements for OSTA.

Operations and Processes

You will look to develop safety programs and initiatives that support OSTA policies and procedures, while simultaneously developing performance standards for OSTA operators that ensure established standards are adhered to.

Analytical and Metrics-Driven

You will develop and prepare statistical, financial, administrative, and similar reports, in particular those that support provincial government funding calculations.

The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) is responsible for all home-to-school transportation on behalf of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) and the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB). Everyday, OSTA delivers safe and efficient transportation services to over 124,000 students at both its Member School Boards using yellow buses, wheelchair buses, school purpose vans and School Active Transportation programs.

Skills & Experience

Experience

You bring 10+ years of experience in the field of operations and/or administration, in transportation planning or within a customer service capacity. Ideally, you have a comprehensive knowledge of Provincial and Federal Legislation and how it relates to transportation.

Leadership & Collaboration

You are a natural leader with experience supervising, mentoring, or managing other individuals in a professional setting. Your experience working with and managing diverse teams will be essential as you will need to have insight across several departments within OSTA.

Communication & Relationship-Building

You are a strong and articulate communicator who tailors your approach in order to connect with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and affiliations. Your level-headed approach to problem solving enables you to bring about a solution where all parties feel heard, supported and that their concerns have been addressed.

Data & KPI-Driven

You are comfortable diving into numbers and metrics in order to present suggestions and create operational excellence. You have the ability to understand and leverage data to identify and pursue growth opportunities. You have had oversight of invoices and purchase orders, to build out an accurate budget.

Summary of the Role

As Assistant General Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day business operations, evaluating and coordinating within current systems and processes, while supporting the mission and growth initiatives of the organization. Reporting to the General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, the Assistant General Manager is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the delivery of daily transportation services, safety and operational needs as they apply to the provision of student transportation. You will oversee the coordination of all school bus routes and related contracted vehicles, while performing ongoing evaluations and reviews of operational requirements for OSTA. Understanding the wins and challenges of the current team will help you narrow down focus areas where productivity and effectiveness can be optimized.

The role will require you to be extremely process oriented and operationally minded by nature in the areas of transportation management & planning, operations and financial management. You will look to develop safety programs and initiatives that support OSTA policies and procedures, while simultaneously developing performance standards for OSTA operators that ensure established standards are adhered to. You will also support the General Manager/CAO when it comes to the development and preparation of statistical, financial, administrative, and similar reports, in particular those that support provincial government funding calculations.

It will be essential that you maintain good working relationships with Police Services, Municipalities, Public Transit and other relevant authorities so as to ensure the safety and security of the school transportation system. Similarly, seeing as this is a leadership position, you will provide direction and guidance to your team in order to ensure and execute this operational excellence across the organization.
