The Talent Market Is Shifting: What We’re Seeing This Quarter

As an executive search firm partnering with organizations across Canada, we get a clear view of how the job market is evolving. Shifts in the economy, workplace expectations, and leadership priorities are changing how both employers and candidates approach opportunity. Every few months, we pause to look at what’s happening in real time, and reflect on what those changes mean for the people and companies we work with.

More Professionals Are Exploring What’s Next

One of the most notable shifts has been the surge in engagement when we bring new roles to market. In the past, we’d be pleased to see 50-60% of candidates open to a conversation. Lately, that number has climbed closer to 70-80%.

More people seem to be taking stock of their careers and asking, “Is this still the right place for me?” Some are looking for new challenges or a workplace that better reflects their values. Others are feeling the ripple effects of change within their organizations or industries.

For employers, this is a good reminder that engagement doesn’t take care of itself. Keeping strong performers connected to the work and to the mission requires ongoing effort, including open communication, growth opportunities, and recognition that feels genuine.

Applications Are Rising and So Is Competition

We’re also seeing record numbers of applications for many of our searches. It’s not uncommon now for a single posting to attract several hundred applicants, sometimes upwards of 500.

This increased activity reflects a competitive market where highly skilled professionals are either out of work or eager to make a move. It also emphasizes how important it is for candidates to have a clear, compelling profile that aligns closely with what the job is looking for. Employers have options, and how you show up in that process matters.

At Keynote, we’re mindful that behind every résumé is a person with ambitions, experiences, and goals. We never take that for granted.

A Market in Motion

Taken together, these indicators point to a market that’s active, engaged, and in flux. Professionals are open to new opportunities. Employers are rethinking how they attract and retain leadership talent. And the pace of change isn’t slowing down.

It’s an exciting and challenging time to be in executive search. Every conversation we have, whether with clients or candidates, helps us better understand what drives people and organizations forward. That’s the foundation of meaningful, lasting connections, and it’s what keeps us inspired every day at Keynote Search.
