The Ottawa Food Bank is a Canadian registered charity and non-profit organization that was established in 1984 as a measure to fight community hunger. As the need for emergency access to food continues to increase in the Nation’s Capital, the Ottawa Food Bank sees firsthand how hunger affects the community and how it can become a barrier to success. As an organization, it has a clear vision: to provide healthy, accessible and sustainable food for all. Working in partnership with a network of over 100 food programs, the Ottawa Food Bank is focused on creating a healthier city by empowering people, increasing access to healthy food and advocating for systemic changes that will reduce food insecurity.

The Ottawa Food Bank is the central food collection, storage and distribution centre for a network of front-line food programs across the city which includes community food banks, food cupboards, meal programs, multi-service programs, summer lunch programs and After 4 Clubs. Through the efforts of the food bank and its partners, it serves close to 40,000 people every month as well as over 100,000 snacks to after school programs and delivers over 7.1 million pounds of food across the city.

Summary of the Role

The Operations team at the Ottawa Food Bank is critical to its ability to distribute food safely and efficiently to the Ottawa community. As Director of Operations, you will have direct oversight of the warehouse, food collection, and distribution operations of the Ottawa Food Bank.

Reporting directly to the CEO, and working in tandem with the senior leadership team, you will be given the opportunity to work closely on the strategic direction of the organization, acting as a voice for your team in regards to operational goals, efficiencies, and strategy, and ultimately assisting to address food insecurity.

This is a critical and influential leadership role that will afford you the opportunity to oversee a multifaceted, passionate and high-functioning team. With Operations being a large and complex department within the organization, the general management and financial management will be equally important and a fundamental part of your role as the Director of Operations. You will lead the development of an annual departmental plan as well as prepare and oversee the department budget. You will also utilize your analytical skills to create new key performance indicators, operational efficiencies and insightful recommendations for the organization. Ultimately, as the organization continues to grow and evolve, you will be called on to utilize your financial acumen, detail orientation and strategic mind to collaboratively plan and organize the department to perform at its highest potential.

Beyond financial and general management, there are multiple priorities which require you to play a key leadership role both internally across all departments and externally with various stakeholders. In order to build strong relationships and to potentially extend new opportunities, you will be in frequent communication with external contacts including: suppliers, partner food bank programs, vendors, corporate and individual food donors, volunteers, the general public, and government representatives. As a true advocate for the organization, your strong internal communication skills will be integral to cross- departmental synergy, and in turn the successful and sustainable growth of the organization and its ability to best serve the community.

The Ottawa Food Bank will be moving into a new facility next year. The Director of Operations will be hands-on in its new head office buildout, and will collaborate directly with the Project Manager and any additional external stakeholders that are involved in the project. There is a unique opportunity for your leadership to result in a significant improvement to the delivery of services, kickstarting the beginning of a journey to re- energize and stabilize the organization in its entirety.
