As they look toward an ambitious future that includes expanding their portfolio and potentially venturing into property development, they are seeking a dedicated Financial Controller to lead the transition to an in-house finance model and provide the hands-on and strategic oversight necessary to support this continued growth.

Compensation: $90,000 – $110,000

Experience

You possess at least 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally within the real estate or property management sectors, and have a proven track record of driving business value beyond the balance sheet.

Financial Knowledge

While a CPA designation is not a formal requirement, you must demonstrate a deep knowledge of financial statements and the ability to navigate the complexities of both residential and commercial property financials.

Motivated

You are motivated by an environment where you can seamlessly pivot between the technical execution of full-cycle accounting and high-level entrepreneurial tasks like valuations and cost-benefit analyses.

Summary of the Role

Reporting directly to the Ownership Group, the Financial Controller will serve as the dedicated in-house finance professional and a vital strategic business partner for Fleming Property Management. This is a hands-on, individual contributor role designed to bring sophisticated financial structure to a growing entrepreneurial environment. The core of this position involves the comprehensive execution of the full accounting cycle, which includes maintaining the general ledger, recording journal entries, and ensuring the precise classification of both operating expenses and capital costs. Beyond traditional record-keeping, you will oversee complex, property-specific accounting tasks such as tracking rent collections, managing HST filings, and maintaining detailed mortgage and financing records within Yardi.

This is a hybrid role that requires a high degree of business acumen and an entrepreneurial mindset, as you will act as the financial hub for the organization. The leadership team will look to you to perform high-level business valuations, detailed forecasting, and rigorous cost-benefit analyses that drive operational efficiencies and identify opportunities for cost reduction. As a proactive business partner, you will assist with annual budgeting and provide the ownership group with monthly consolidated financial statements and analysis to support informed, real-time decision-making. 

Furthermore, you will serve as the key liaison for external stakeholders, where you will reconcile mortgage balances with bank statements, monitor maturity schedules, and coordinate directly with lending partners to facilitate renewals and new debt requirements. Your ultimate goal is to establish the robust workflows necessary to translate financial data into the clear, actionable insights that will guide the company through its next phase of expansion and potential property development.
