Leadership Role

Stakeholder & Partnership Development

You will be present within the Club, interacting with members and be active at tournaments. It will be imperative that you absorb feedback and collect data which you will later use to identify areas of success and improvement.

Located in the heart of Old Ottawa South, the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club (OTLBC) is one of the hidden treasures of the nation’s Capital. The OTLBC provides a complete summer experience that includes tennis, swimming, beach volleyball, dining, and relaxation. The Club is a board governed, not-for-profit organization, that involves committed and engaged members who enjoy and support the sport of tennis.

Skills & Experience

Background

Your background exhibits a strong record of accomplishment in the not-for-profit sector or other relevant sectors. It is likely that you have built your career around community, recreational initiatives, or sports programs. You have progressive experience in managing and delivering programs related to sports, recreation, and/or activities.

Business Acumen

You have a considerable amount of experience and skills within HR, marketing, and management. Both reliable and accountable, you stick to your commitments around time, cost, service, and are experienced in managing financials and capital budgets. You come from a background where you have successfully sourced and won grants or negotiated other funding opportunities.

Community Centric

You are passionate about the sports and recreation community and you will have the best interest of OTLBC members set as a high priority. You are comfortable interacting with children, youth, adults, and seniors, and are quite passionate about making impactful exchanges as you get to know more about OTLBC participants.

Operational Management Experience

You have overseen finance, staff, programming, and stakeholder relationships. You are a driven individual with strong communication skills, having the vision and culture of the organization top of mind.

Summary of the Role

Reporting to the President of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead and oversee strategic and operational management of the Club. Key facets of this operational role will include effective stakeholder management, financial responsibility, oversight of new and existing programs, staff leadership, operations and facilities management, and membership services.

You will play a key role in planning and will work to identify and execute on strategic growth initiatives identified in partnership with the board, including funding opportunities, developing and implementing new programs and services, and member recruitment and retention. In learning more about the Club, its history, and vision going forward, you will assess specific conditions impacting the Club and in collaboration with the board, will make efforts to improve processes and find or create efficiencies. To ensure the quality and effectiveness of programming and services, you will work with the board, committees, and your team to identify priorities, objectives, and gaps within activities and services, making recommendations as necessary.

Effective leadership of your team is a key aspect of this role. You will work with a core team of 4 dedicated full-time professionals, as well as 40+ seasonal staff, and a variety of volunteers. Upon establishing trust, you will build upon and enhance a collaborative, fun, and inclusive environment. You will be expected to thoughtfully guide, motivate, and provide support to your team, assisting them with any issues that may arise, while maintaining an exceptional level of service for Club members. You will be comfortable delegating where appropriate, leaning on the team to help guide you as you plant your roots and begin to learn the cadence and pace of the operations.

Your day to day will look different depending on the season and it will be key that you maintain adaptability to some of the fluctuations in your role. Currently, throughout the Fall-Winter months, the Club is closed, and during this time you will be focused primarily on planning for the Club’s opening in May. You will work with your team to ensure programming is prepared, contracts are in place, and the seasonal staff are hired. You will assist with identifying and preparing grant proposals and fundraising opportunities. While stakeholder and partnership development is ongoing, it is likely that you will spend more time liaising and establishing relationships during this period. During the active season (Spring-Summer months), you will oversee much of the work you and your team planned for, in full swing. You will be present within the Club, interacting with members and be active at tournaments. It will be imperative that you absorb feedback and collect data which you will later use to identify areas of success and improvement.

Moving further into a post-pandemic environment, you will be responsible for reviewing, identifying, and building new revenue streams. As Executive Director, you will provide oversight and guidance to ensure participation is supported, enhanced, and wide-reaching. You will continue producing successful programs and events, while researching new potential programming, funding, and revenue sources. This includes building key partnerships and working alongside the board and staff to develop actionable fundraising plans. With a winterizing restoration project for the clubhouse underway, you will explore options of how to best utilize the space all year round. Contributing to the strategic direction and key priorities of the Club, you will recommend and action as approved, options to grow membership and broaden services.

As Executive Director, you will conduct, manage, and execute a strategic plan for the organization’s future by leveraging its existing foundation, increasing stakeholder engagement, and empowering staff. You will be accountable for reporting to the board while overseeing successful programming, finances, administration, and HR, while demonstrating readiness and determination. You will additionally be present at key committee meetings and communicative in sharing ideas and decisions between the board and staff. Approaching this opportunity with a fresh perspective, readiness, determination, and enthusiasm to take on challenges, will be integral in maintaining objectives and continuing organizational success.
