Position: Executive Director

Established in November 2022, the National Maritime Group (NMG) represents nearly 100 private sector maritime employers and operators from coast to coast, including the St. Lawrence region. NMG’s associations, marine terminals and carriers play a crucial role in moving essential goods and providing well-paying, family-supporting jobs across 14 Canadian ports in five provinces. This forward-thinking organization is a collaborative partnership between the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), Maritime Employers Association (MEA), Halifax Employers Association (HEA), and the Port of Saint John Employers Association (PSJEA).

The NMG advocates for the maritime industry’s interests, promoting safe and sustainable practices while enhancing the sector’s economic contributions in Canada. It actively engages with various stakeholders, including government bodies, industry partners, and local communities, to address critical maritime issues such as shipping, environmental protection, and infrastructure development. Additionally, the NMG focuses on policy development, research, and initiatives that support innovation and competitiveness within Canada’s maritime sector.

 

Skills & Experience

Background

You have worked in both public and private organizations and understand the complexity of the environment.

Expertise

You have a strong understanding of Canadian government and politics, including parliamentary affairs and have managed campaigns with strong networks.

Leadership

Experience

Your experience in drafting policy submissions such as responses to legislation and pre-budgets submissions will serve you well as you bring important changes and issues to the members of Parliament.

Your ability to communicate with your members effectively will be invaluable as you identify common issues that affect the maritime industry and strengthen the collaborative voice of the organization

Summary of the Role

Working with the Steering Committee Leadership, and supported by the Secretariat, the Executive Director (ED) will be responsible for maintaining NMG’s growth and influence in the federal political landscape through the day-to-day operations of the group. The three main areas of focus will be operations, communication, and policy development & implementation.

Collaborating closely with the Steering Committee, the Executive Director is tasked with defining the operational trajectory of the organization, ensuring that it remains in line with the updated strategic plan that you will collaboratively develop. In addition, you will be responsible for setting and maintaining the budget with the guidance of the Steering Committee. Central to this role is the need to stay up to date with the private maritime sector, changes in government policies and personnel, and communicating directly with the Committee.

With the assistance of the NMG Secretariat, you will be responsible for the internal and external communications to all stakeholders which include the participating Associations, federal government departments, and key business and maritime transportation stakeholders. Your experience in drafting policy submissions such as responses to legislation and pre-budgets submissions will serve you well as you bring important changes and issues to the members of Parliament.

A priority for your role as ED is to be the voice of NMG and the maritime private sector, and ensure it is heard nationally and with the key government stakeholders. Your ability to communicate with your members effectively will be invaluable as you identify common issues that affect the maritime industry and strengthen the collaborative voice of the organization.
