Ask Our Team - Social Media & Software

With a diverse team of individuals at Keynote that have a wide range of career backgrounds and skillsets, we still have a few, notable things in common. Not only are we passionate about humanizing recruitment, but we are also avid technology users at work and in our personal lives. This inspired us to compare and contrast what social media platforms, softwares and methods of communication resonate the most with each team member.

Matt Hart, Talent Manager

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

Professionally, it's hands-down LinkedIn. As a recruitment professional, I correspond with dozens of people daily on the platform and use the feed to attempt to stay informed with articles on trends in the industry.

On the personal side, I check Facebook most days. Although my feed these days is often filled with too many negative politically-themed posts, I enjoy the opportunity to remain more closely connected with friends, family, classmates, and ex-coworkers.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

With baseball back in full swing, the software I can't go a day without this month are my Yahoo and CBS Fantasy Baseball sites. Okay. this may not really be a "software" per se, but I'm there everyday. Go Jays Go!

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

It definitely depends on the type of communication and the audience but if I had to choose one it would be the telephone. There's just no way to maintain a stronger personal connection and less of a chance that something gets mixed up. Also, I can be a little sarcastic at times and there still isn't a "sarcasm font" that lets people know that I'm just joking!

Kelsey Mayo, Marketing Coordinator

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

Honestly, I think it’s a tie between Instagram and LinkedIn. I use both of these platforms for work to promote any exciting Keynote content to showcase our brand authentically.

BUT I do also use Instagram socially a lot in my spare time… Anything food/travel/corgi related and funny (sarcastic humour, obviously) is right up my alley.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

I think that out of all of the tools that I use, Act-On is the one that I rely on the most. I’m a self-proclaimed “organized chaos” person at times, and the efficiency of having a “Marketing Automation Calendar” plays a big part in keeping me organized in the planning of promoting content on social platforms. It’s a really simple platform to use and it’s the first thing that I check when I get to the office in the morning - helps set my day up for success.

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

I’m a big advocate for efficiency - I’m always saying “cut to the chase”. If it’s something short and sweet, text or email me (I check both the same amount because I’m typically in front of both all day). If it’s a longer conversation to be had then calling is the way to go if writing an email will take much longer to do.

Matt Northrup, Talent Manager

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

Well, as a headhunter (although I prefer the term "matchmaker") the obvious choice would be LinkedIn, but I get a lot of my supplementary research done on Facebook. Understanding what motivates people is critical and it's something I'm very interested in - Facebook can tell some great stories in that way.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

Does a phone app count? Sure it does. The podcast app on my iPhone. I could fill an ocean with the things I DON'T know, but continuous learning is important to me. I'm always on the go, so podcasts are an excellent medium for jamming my brain full of interesting things.

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

Face to face, always. To be effective at this job, I lean on the things I picked up during my previous career in intelligence. When it comes to understanding people, managing expectations, and influencing outcomes, there's simply no substitute for sitting down with someone and talking. It's time consuming though, so email tends to be my next pick. It's the best place to transmit and capture details - details are important to me. Like the spelling error in this paragraph.

Brad Ezard, Chief Operating Officer

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

The easy ones here would be LinkedIn and Instagram, but I'll take it back a decade and say Twitter. I'm a big sports and news reader so I'll check that a few times a day when I have some downtime.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

Part of my role involves finding the right cluster of apps to help our business grow, so I'm constantly on the hunt for additions to our software stack. One app I've really enjoyed recently is Kiwi for G-Suite. With so much of our job being done on over email, I need a strong app that helps me manage high volumes and stay organized.

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

Email during the day - text for after hours - phone while I'm in the car. (I bet Kyle Turk is the only one who uses the DMs...)

Kyle Turk, Vice President of Marketing

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

For personal use I don’t go a day without browsing Instagram and keeping up with my favourite hip-hop artists Lil’ Durk, Meek Mill and Tory Lanez.

For professional use I can’t go without a daily browse on LinkedIn. The only platform where humble brags are acceptable as part of a personal brand. I also analyze the company page analytics daily to see what types of posts perform best, which do not, which times/days get more engagement, etc. Using this data to make better informed decisions to maximize our social reach and engagement can be very rewarding.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

Act-On. It is our marketing automation platform and once again it provides ample amounts of data to help better our marketing processes and understand the client/prospect journey.

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

It depends on the context. For fun social engagement with friends/family I like direct messaging on social platforms (particularly Instagram). For work related communication I still prefer email as it is easy to filter, sort and stay organized with prioritized items.

Donna Baker, Managing Partner

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

I’m on Facebook for non-work/social purposes every day, I would say. And for work I’m definitely on linkedin by far the most during my work week.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

I don’t have any software platforms that come to mind, and it’s not really a software but I'm always online researching most days, so google is my go-to.

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

I'm most likely to respond to email or message but if I'm reaching out to someone, I like a good old fashioned phone conversation! It’s much more personal.

James Baker, Chief Executive Officer

What is one social platform that you can’t go a day without using?

I'm a huge LinkedIn fan but use Reddit for news and debate on everything from sports to technology and news.

What is one software that you can’t go a day without using?

G-Suite, everything for us runs on GSuite and I have all my widgets and plug-ins running which help automate and manage my day effectively

Do you prefer to communicate through text, email, phone or direct-messaging?

Phone is my preferred but can be very impractical, as I am always in meetings or engaging in conversations, so usually a quick text message is best. I tend to not attend to emails where I am cc'ed or grouped on as quickly. So if someone does email me and wants me to quick attention to it, then I let people know to just directly email me.
